Analysis of storm surge events along the Norwegian coast

چکیده
Observed extreme sea levels are caused by a combination of astronomical tide and storm surge, or an value in one these variables moderate the other. We analyzed measurements from Norwegian gauge network together with track data to assess cases level surges. At most stations highest surges only coincided tides vice versa . Simultaneously often intensities. This opens for possibility flooding events, where co-occur, which could exceed existing records national building standards. study also raises return values as three-variable system, treating separately tide, location intensity, instead one- two-variable approach currently used.

A CYCLONE INDUCED STORM SURGE FORECASTING MODEL FOR THE COAST OF BANGLADESH WITH APPLICATION TO THE CYCLONE `SIDR'
The coast of Bangladesh has a specialty in terms of high bending and many off- shore islands. Incorporation of the coastline and island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme is essential for accurate estimation of water levels due to surge. For that purpose a numerical scheme consisting of very fine mesh is required along the coastal belt, whereas this is unnecessary away from the coast. In...
متن کاملPredictability of Seasonal East Coast Winter Storm Surge Impacts with Application to New York's Long Island (running Title: Predictability of East Coast Winter Storm Surge Impacts)
The characteristics of seasons with enhanced East Coast winter storm and storm surge activity are identified from among a set of global atmospheric circulation indices and local land and sea surface temperature anomalies. Without regard for storm strength or surge potential, the most active East Coast winter storm (ECWS) seasons occur in association with El Niño events. There is also some indic...
متن کاملBivariate Analysis of Extreme Wave and Storm Surge Events. Determin- ing the Failure Area of Structures
In the present paper a bivariate process of extreme waves and storm surges at a Dutch station on the North Sea is considered. A bivariate logistic model and a sequential estimation procedure are used to extract joint exceedance probabilities of the two variables. The parameters of the margins of the bivariate distribution are defined by three different methods of estimation: a) the Maximum Like...
متن کاملStranding Events of Kogia Whales along the Brazilian Coast
The genus Kogia, which comprises only two extant species, Kogia sima and Kogia breviceps, represents one of the least known groups of cetaceans in the global ocean. In some coastal regions, however, stranding events of these species have been relatively common over the last decades. Stranding provides the opportunity to investigate the biology of these cetaceans and to explore the epidemiologic...
